CII Performance Management & CII Simulator
Understand your vessel’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) performance and evaluate improvement opportunities before taking action. Ecosail Infotech helps shipowners, operators, and fleet managers monitor CII ratings, analyze performance trends, and identify vessels at risk of lower ratings.
With the CII Simulator, users can evaluate operational scenarios, such as speed adjustments and voyage planning, to assess their potential impact on CII performance. Gain actionable insights, plan improvement measures, and support better carbon efficiency and regulatory readiness.
CII Performance Management & Simulator
Monitor vessel carbon intensity, understand rating risks, and explore improvement scenarios
What is the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII)?
The Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) is an operational carbon-intensity measure established by the IMO under MARPOL Annex VI for applicable ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above. It assesses a ship’s annual CO₂ emissions relative to its transport work, using the applicable ship-type methodology. Ships receive an annual rating from A (best performance) to E (lowest performance). The CII framework took effect in 2023.
Key elements of CII
- Annual calculation and rating on a scale from A to E.
- Performance monitoring against the applicable required CII.
- Ships rated D for three consecutive years, or rated E for a single year, must develop a corrective action plan through the applicable SEEMP process.
- Ongoing monitoring helps operators understand performance trends and plan improvement measures.
Ecosail’s CII Performance Management Software
Ecosail Infotech’s CII solution helps shipowners, operators, and fleet managers monitor vessel carbon intensity, review performance trends, and identify ships that may need attention. By bringing operational and emissions information into a structured view, it supports data-informed decisions for CII management and improvement planning.
CII Simulator from Ecosail Infotech
Ecosail also provides a dedicated CII Simulator. The simulator enables users to explore potential operational scenarios and assess how selected changes may influence a vessel’s projected CII performance. Teams can compare possible approaches before implementation and use the results as decision support for planning—not as a guarantee of a particular rating or outcome.
Key features
CII rating calculator and monitoring
- Calculate or review CII performance using available vessel and operational data, subject to the configured methodology.
- Track annual performance and rating trends over time.
- Identify vessels that may be trending toward a lower rating and require further review.
CII Simulator and scenario planning
- Explore potential effects of operational changes on projected CII performance.
- Compare scenarios such as speed adjustments, voyage planning changes, and operational or cargo-related optimization where supported by the model inputs.
- Use scenario comparisons to inform planning and evaluate improvement options before acting.
Fleet dashboard and performance insights
- Review vessel performance across a fleet in one place.
- Help prioritize vessels for closer analysis or improvement planning.
- Support communication between shipboard teams, technical superintendents, and shore-based management.
Alerts and data quality
- Flag missing or inconsistent source data for review.
- Highlight vessels whose current trends may warrant attention.
- Use organized records to support internal performance reviews and reporting workflows.
Benefits for your fleet
Act before performance deteriorates: Monitor trends and investigate potential risks before the annual rating is finalized.
Make better-informed decisions: Use the CII Simulator to compare possible operational scenarios and understand their potential implications.
Prioritize improvement efforts: Focus analysis and resources on vessels where performance gaps or risks are most significant.
Benchmark fleet performance: Review differences across vessels to identify where further investigation or shared best practices may help.
Support decarbonization planning: Use performance insights to inform operational measures and longer-term efficiency initiatives.
Who can benefit?
- Shipowners and operators seeking visibility into vessel CII performance.
- Fleet managers coordinating performance improvement across multiple vessels.
- Technical superintendents evaluating operational factors and potential interventions.
- Sustainability and compliance teams supporting carbon-efficiency planning and regulatory readiness.
Data integrations and implementation
CII analysis depends on the quality and availability of vessel, fuel, distance, and other required inputs. Integration scope, calculation methodology, forecast assumptions, deployment options, and available security controls should be confirmed with Ecosail for the proposed implementation.
